Karcher pressure washer gas engine won’t start?

I bought a 2600 PSI Karcher pressure washer with a Honda 160cc engine at Sam’s Club at 15% off the list price. It was a display model, but the spark plug was dirty, so maybe someone returned it after using it. I am getting a spark to appear by holding it disconnected next to the engine.
I added new fuel, changed the spark plug, check the lines for blockage, but it won’t start. I squirted gas into the cylinder through the spark plug hole and it started for a few seconds. However, it won’t stay running.
Is there anything else I should try before returning it?
I followed the directions, in that I did check to make sure that the oil was full, the choke was in the start position and the fuel line was set in the open position, and fuel was reaching the carburetor (by taking off the fuel line and letting it run). I took off the spray nozzle and water was running freely. Previously, I tried starting it with the trigger depressed too.

It may seem odd because it is new but you probably have a small amount of water sitting in the bowl of the carburetor. I would remove the carb and take the bowl off the carb and rinse it out with fresh gas. (You don’t have to take the carb off if you have easy access to it) I would also let some of the gas run out of the gas supply hose. Put the carb assembly back on the engine and top the gas tank off adding a 1/4 to 1/3 small bottle of STP Gas Treatment. Save a little of the mixture to pour into the cylinder. Put the fresh spark plug in and start the motor. I don’t believe you’ll have any more problems.

It sounds like the needle valve in the carburetor is clogged. Clean the carb and it should run.

Have you checked to see if there is a fuel shut off switch?

Is there oil in the motor? Most will not start as a safety feature if there is not any oil.

Is there a choke switch and have you used it.

Pressure washers are different than most equipment with motors. I’ve found on mine that first, always make sure the water is hooked up and running good. Hold the trigger down to make sure there’s water coming out. If there’s dirt in the line, a kink in the hose or whatever stopping the water, you can mess up the washer. Now, turn it to choke and start etc. and HOLD the trigger down while you pull the cord. This is very important. I know mine will not start, or will not continue to run, if I’m not holding the trigger down. Once everything starts good and you can move the lever from choke to run you can release the trigger and it should keep running. I believe the cause of your problem is not holding the trigger down. Good luck.

Everyone here has good suggestions. I had a similar experience with a Honda generator engine. It was new also. We did the fuel in the sparkplug hole 3 times before it continued to run. Now it starts every time. Just a note, water in a gas tank looks like blobs on the bottom of the tank.

double kink the water hose, squeeze the trigger on the gun and it should start with one pull.
